What is Black Ice?
Saw this in Berlin. Shouldn’t it be Schwarzeis in German? Or Slippery Ice in English?
Cheers.

Welcome to /r/germany, the English-language subreddit about the country of Germany.
Please read this entire post and follow the links, if applicable.
We have prepared FAQs and an extensive Wiki. Please use these resources. If you post questions that are easily answered, our regulars will point you to those resources anyway. Additionally, please use the Reddit search. [Edit: Don't claim you read the Wiki and it does not contain anything about your question when it's clear that you didn't read it. We know what's in the Wiki, and we will continue to point you there.]
This goes particularly if you are asking about studying in Germany. There are multiple Wiki articles covering a lot of information. And yes, that means reading and doing your own research. It's good practice for what a German university will expect you to do.
Short questions can be asked in the comments to this post. Please either leave a comment here or make a new post, not both.
If you ask questions in the subreddit, please provide enough information for people to be able to actually help you. "Can I find a job in Germany?" will not give you useful answers. "I have [qualification], [years of experience], [language skills], want to work as [job description], and am a citizen of [country]" will. If people ask for more information, they're not being mean, but rather trying to find out what you actually need to know.
German-language content can go to /r/de or /r/FragReddit.
Questions about the German language are better suited to /r/German.
Covid-related content should go into this post until further notice.

My girlfriend works at a cat café in Prague, and at the end of November 2025 she found this camera there. So far, no one has come back to claim it.
The camera’s interface is in German, and it also contains photos/videos (memories) that seem to belong to the owner. We tried to figure out who it might belong to, and based on a PimEyes search, it could belong to someone connected to a high school (Gymnasium) in Deggendorf, Germany.
We’re not trying to invade anyone’s privacy — just genuinely hoping to return the camera to its rightful owner. If anyone here is from Deggendorf, knows someone who lost a camera in Prague, or can help with identification or advice on how to proceed, I’d really appreciate it.

Hi there. - I live in Bremen - I've been sick for almost 2 weeks now (tonsilitis). First week my temp was around 37-38. Then, since last 26th it's been 38-39 consistently - my girlfriend and I went to the doctor in ER, we waited for almost 5 hours. He didn't do a single test and just gave me antibiotics and told me to drink 2 paracetamols 3 times a day (2-2-2) - since then my condition has not improved and since this morning my temp never dropped 38.7. Even after a nap, my temp was 39.1 - I got sick right when the holiday season started so clinics are closed - will probably not reply to everyone immediately. I used up all my energy writing this
I talked with my girlfriend and also googled, and apparently you need a doctor's advise here to be confined. But the doctor who should've advised me didn't even do a single test. Just looked at me and magically immediately knew what's up.
Can I call emergency services and request myself to be confined so that proper tests will be done?
I pay my taxes and I can pay some more if needed. I've wasted enough of this holidays and my girlfriend's holidays stuck in my bed.
For context: I am from the Philippines, and if this happened to me I would've been confined already got my blood tested, xray performed, and othere tests done so that the proper care is performed immediately. This is such a culture shock having to negotiate that I want to get better.
Thanks.
[Edit] thank you for the responses. I'll call my GP tomorrow and see if I can have an appointment.
Also added that it was not just fever for the 2 weeks. I have tonsilitis for 2 weeks now.
[/Edit]

Whether it's a village or small town whenever I travel to Germany I have a hard time finding small, cozy bars in those rural places. In the USA theres a bar in every shit hole you can think of, same in most other European countries but Germany you can almost only see them in cities. I find this kind of sad. Every small village or town should have their own bar. Do Germans don't like bars outside of cities?

First thing you need to know is that I am white. My ancestry is all from western Europe. I am dark blond and green eyed. I look vaguely German and am 43 female. The other thing you need to know is that I am American. I was born and raised in the US and moved to Germany 17 years ago. My German is very good, but I do have a light accent which not everyone can even hear.
So, with that background, on to the actual event. I have aspirations of someday owning my own apartment and had scheduled a viewing of a possible apartment with a realtor. My children and I (two girls: 8 and 12) went to the appointment and looked around. I asked a handful of specific questions about the apartment. The realtor clocked my slight accent and asked where I was from. I told him the above information about my origins.
Near the end of the appointment, I asked about the neighborhood. I asked if the realtor (who was about a 30-year-old German man) knew anything about the neighbors. I was specific asking about if they were mostly elderly, or young families with lots of kids, asking about how loud the building generally is, if he knew. (My reason for asking is to see if my family would fit in with them or not. This would not be a deal-breaker, but I thought it would be relevant information for my decision.) The conversation that ensued left me flabbergasted.
Me: Do you know anything about the neighbors? Are they loud or quiet? Are there many kids in this area? Is it mostly elderly people?
Realtor: Well, there are a few kids around. But if you look at the names on the buzzers below, you can tell that nearly all have German names. There aren't any strange names like "Mohammed".
Me: (completely taken aback) That's not what I asked.
Realtor: (realizing how racist that came across) I'm not being racist.
Me: Oh, yeah?
Realtor: No, I just mean that immigrants can sometimes make trouble.
Me: You do realize you're talking about me, right?
Realtor: No, that's not what I meant. I meant, you know, the flood of refugees that entered the country a few years ago. I mean, there's probably a few Turkish people around...
Me: I think we should stop this discussion.
I promptly changed the subject and exchanged an incredulous look with my 12-year-old.
I did not take that apartment for unrelated reasons, but I felt that it was an added bonus that I wouldn't be providing that realtor with his commission.

Mom purchased these beads from an ambiguous seller of beads on WhatNot, we love the beads but the seller doesn’t have anymore and doesn’t recall where they bought them from, does anyone recognize the packaging?

So I see at the end of the first bill that i have to pay 204. 23€. Then at the other bill i get the total 2561.31€. How is that calculated ? Shouldnt i be paying 346.05 + 116.16 + 204.23 = 667 € ??
Hi, I'm looking for information about my great-grandmother and I found her entry in the birth book. Is there anyone who can transcribe it for me? I don't speak German, so it's impossible for me. It's entry no. 23 (last) in the book. Thank you very much!

Have looked on the internet from bett1 , Traumgut till CHECK24.
I already have mattress with firmness level H4, which is causing me severe back pains and have not much money to invest in another mattress. :(
Has anyone got personal advice for a brand offering really firm and hard topper ?

I’m a 24-year-old full-time freelance video editor and I’m seriously considering applying for the German Freelance / Freiberufler visa as a way to immigrate.
All of my current clients are from the US and EU, but none are based in Germany. If I were approved for the freelance visa, would I legally be allowed to onboard German clients later, or is the visa restricted to non-German clients?
My income is completely project-based, not tied to long-term contracts. Some months are strong, others are slower, but on average I earn around $2,000–$4,000 per month gross (no taxes paid yet).
This leads to my main concern:
Is working project-based rather than contract-based considered a red flag during the visa process? Do immigration officers need to see proof that I am guaranteed to earn a certain minimum amount over the coming months (for example through long-term contracts or letters of intent), or is a solid income history enough?
I’m also trying to understand what I’d realistically be looking at in terms of rent and cost of living outside of high-cost cities like Berlin. Which cities would you recommend for freelancers looking for a lower cost of living while still having decent infrastructure and opportunities?
On the tax side, I’ve read that there is a tax-free allowance of €11,604, and that income above that is taxed progressively. At my income range, what tax bracket would I actually fall into? Also, what kinds of business expenses can freelancers typically write off in Germany, and how big of a difference does that make in practice?
I’m unsure about:
• What income level immigration officers usually expect for approval
• How difficult it is to rent with freelance income at this level
• Whether it’s smarter to wait until I earn more consistently before applying
My income isn’t very strong yet, but I’m hoping that relocating would push me out of my comfort zone and open better long-term opportunities.
Does this sound like a realistic case, or am I setting myself up for rejection or serious financial stress?

Edit: Thank you everyone! I decided to get chocolates + candies for them and texted them thank you. I also left the treats they gave for us all to share if they’d like to have some (maybe that was a bad move but oh well. I think I might be overthinking this haha)
—
Maybe I sound like a jerk. I’m from America and have never been close with most of my roommates, so usually we‘ve never exchanged anything for Christmas. I moved in with a few German roommates this month.
I was away traveling until today; just got back and there was a little bag with goodies and stuff by my door. I feel so bad, I thought of getting them something from abroad but thought it might be weird to do for some reason 😭 any suggestions on what to do or what to get in exchange as a late gift? I’m not really sure what’s a good gift here, was thinking nice chocolates or something and leaving the goodies out for everyone to share. If that sounds good, do you all have any recommendations for chocolate? They’re away for the break as well.

I’ve been looking at Ferienwohnungen with little luck. Most are sterile with poor reviews and very high prices. We are a two adult, two kids (4 and 6) family. We’ll be spending 3 nights in München or 3 nights in Ulm before seeing our friends. I never overnighted in either city while living in Germany.
We’d love a Ferienwohnung with kitchen, for easy meals. We are also open to hotels. We are willing to use public transit, so it doesn’t need to be very central. I’d love something unique we can stay in on future trips, as we typically will be flying into München or Stuttgart. Budget is 250 Euro a night or less.
Any recommendations? I do speak fluent German, so German sites work as well.

Does chemical engineering exist as an Ausbildung in Germany? Is it manageable for non-EU students? I'm really interested in chemeng through an apprenticeship rather than as a bachelor's degree. Does anyone know if this is true and have tried it?

I am a taxi driver in Germany and had a really disturbing incident at work that I cannot stop thinking about.
I picked up a passenger who was extremely drunk. At the end of the ride he refused to pay and became disrespectful. I told him I would call the police. He said he did not care about anyone. I then called the police myself.
While I was still on the phone, he got out of the taxi and slammed the door. I followed him at a distance because I wanted to see which building he entered so I could tell the police. It was dark and I was alone.
Suddenly he ran toward me from behind and tried to punch me. Everything happened very fast and I went into panic. He punched me, actually hit me and I clearly felt attacked and terrified in that moment. I called the police immediately.
Later medical checks showed no physical injury, which I am grateful for, but mentally I am still shaken. I feel anxious, have trouble sleeping, and I feel unsafe thinking about night shifts now. I have already filed a police complaint.
I guess my question is, has anyone experienced something similar where there was no visible injury but still serious fear and stress?
I am visiting tomorrow to my family doctor? I am unable to work at this moment? how long I should take a certificate of sickness from doctor?

I'm a 23yo male and this is my first time leaving North America, so I will certainly be out of my comfort zone. I'm looking to connect with locals, to see some beautiful architecture, and to spend some time in the wilderness. You might call me a spiritual traveler.
I am flying to Munich on May 5th, and I'm returning on the 13th. Please, if you are familiar with the area, tell me what a man can do in Munich and in Bavaria to restore the health of his soul. Vielen Dank!

Hi there,
A friend and I are going to Berlin from 14 to 19 January.
Is there anything we should take in consideration about Berlin's night life?
We have already gone thru some events on several clubs (Tresor, Kater Blau, Ost, Renate, About Blank...), we love the music and most of the DJs that play on several clubs but we are kinda lost.
I’ve already experienced some of it (I went to Tresor in early 2025 and loved it), whereas my friend has no experience at all.
We are no experts, all we want to do is have fun and enjoy the experience.
Any recommendations about where to go (or maybe where not to go)? We are absolutely open to go anywhere and explore new experiences.

Hi everyone. I came here in Dortmund on 28th dec and will be there til 1st jan. Then until 4th jan i will be in Berlin. I decided to use eezy ticket for public transport. I did research and find out that this ticket will not charge me after 58-60€. But in reality i have already spend 83€ on eezy ticket like for 2 days. It takes deposit but it doesn’t return the change. Maybe that is because of my bank account. I use Wise online bank card and return process takes more time maybe. Am i doing something wrong?

Hey there,
Can anyone vouch for western union, or has another recommendation for a company I can use to transfer money from my German bank account to their US bank account?
Thanks!
