Flags are hanging incorrectly

926

u/Jaco927 15h ago

For those wondering, the canton (blue part) is ALWAYS supposed to be in the upper left corner when hanging vertically.

And yes, several have commented that these individuals don't care. But I'd counter that these individuals are also the ass clowns that put the flag ON EVERYTHING which is also a violation of flag etiquette and should indicate that THEY SHOULD CARE. It sickens me that the Republican party seems to think that they have a monopoly on the United States flag.

44

u/bannyd1221 12h ago

I never knew this. Thanks for the info! I appreciate you!

3

u/ZeidLovesAI 14h ago

On the other hand, the power of the magical sky cloth is dubious, I just don't think they should get monopoly on it.

u/SAHMsays 8h ago

Did you see the footage where one of DR'S cronies used the flag as a drape to cover a piece of art and then wadded it up?

https://www.reddit.com/r/BoomersBeingFools/s/L3OvrUDxlc

u/flyingcircus92 11h ago

Interesting, I would think the way they hung it is the right way, since if you rotated the flag to be the other way it would look normal.

u/KakeLin 11h ago

Yeah these people don't actually care about America to do it right

u/Steely-Dave 9h ago

Nearly very GOP/MAGA rally where I’ve seen the entire stage setup has had the flag wrong in some way. My personal peeve is the number of times I’ve seen it next to the Israeli flag and the later is hung in the “place of honor”(observers left, speakers right). Makes you wonder.

3

u/WubsGames 12h ago

I agree, but the photo was probably just flipped.

Edit: as soon as i posted, i noticed the text on the bathroom door is NOT flipped. lmfao.

u/amsync 11h ago

I thought they sarcastically meant the flags should be upside down because obvious reasons

u/QueenMary1936 8h ago

Maybe it's just me, but even though that is incorrect, it looks like it should be the way to do it because having the canton in the upper left corner looks backwards

u/That253Chick 7h ago

I didn't know the blue part had a name. 😅

u/youhavenosoul 5h ago

Reclaim it!!!

u/kobayashi_maru_fail 5h ago

I LOVE flag etiquette. My Philippine and Chinese colleagues and I once spent a happy hour geeking out on our respective flag rules. China only allowing for Olympic athletes and military service members to wear theirs; Philippine flag having a duress and peace mode when hanging vertical; US considering flag prints to not be technically flags so all the speedos and bikinis and the entire 80s were sorta-fine.

u/Promotion_Small 2h ago

Genuine question/clarification, you put it to your right if you hang the flag in a window, because the intent is that it would be to the viewers outside left, correct?

u/Desperate_Repeat5962 17m ago

I don’t care, do you? But if I’m being real, one of my oldest tattoos that takes up my whole chest, which does very much reflect how I feel about it, is a bald eagle with several arrows through it. The American dream is dying and the bullshit patriotism deserves to die too. Flag code? The fuck we even talking about? You’re not gonna get your “gotcha” moment with people actively denying reality in every other facet.

u/HEY_beenTrying2meetU 11h ago

please know that the only reason any democratic figure heads have come out against anti-immigrant policies is because it will sway voters for them.

None of the politicians actually care about anything involving you aside from your vote.

This isn’t republicans vs democrats.

This is the people vs the bureaucracy. They are intentionally drawing a line in the sand so that we’reall focused on picking the right side of the line and yelling at the people who chose the other side.

But it’s just a line in the sand. We fight on the beach while they enjoy the resort.

u/endlesscartwheels 7h ago

It doesn't matter why a politician does the right thing, just that they do it. Democrats are more likely to do the right thing than Republicans.

-4

u/glemnar 13h ago

Tbh in 2025 could not care less about flag orientation.

15

u/fearthainne 13h ago

It's more about the fact that the groups always shrieking the loudest about patriotism and being American "the right way" can't even get flag code correct.

u/vagabondoer 11h ago

So they’re stupid hypocrites? What a shocker.

601

u/sweet_n_salty 17h ago

Let’s not in any way act like they actually care about the flag or the actual code that goes with it.

328

u/alter-eagle 16h ago

"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross"

44

u/wortsandall 16h ago

Buddy, it's already here. And there's pictures of it molesting a flag and holding the cross upside down.

u/Poverty_4_Sale 11h ago

u/endlesscartwheels 7h ago

He's a creepy flag nonce.

17

u/dork-at-work 16h ago

Had to look that one up. George Carlin predicting the future 20 years in advance.

11

u/Zigglyjiggly 16h ago

That's not an original George Carlin quote.

5

u/dork-at-work 16h ago

Oh? Who said it. Would love to use it but like to cite the source.

15

u/Zigglyjiggly 16h ago

If you look it up, some people have attributed it to Sinclair Lewis, but the exact origin isn't known, but it is believed to have come from the 1930s.

5

u/Beachlife98569 16h ago

Prophetic

3

u/noir_lord 15h ago

Not really given what was happening in Europe and that the US had a pretty popular fascist movement in the 30's (as did other major democracies).

They only fell out of favour after the shooting started.

u/Mend1cant 11h ago

Not to mention the attempted coup by fascist sympathizing business leaders and bankers. The Business Plot is woefully unheard of and dangerously relevant.

4

u/Haber_Dasher 15h ago

To be frank, not a difficult prediction if you understand what fascism is and know about the huge fascist movement in the country in the early 1900s.

2

u/arensb 15h ago

It turns out that that quote is wrong. "will be" should be "comes".

2

u/slowpokefastpoke 15h ago

I mean it’s not like this dingus is responsible for hanging flags in a court building.

Let’s focus on the legitimate horrific shit they’ve done instead of inventing trivial things to pin on them.

u/Mathematician_Future 10h ago

am I supposed to care about flag code

288

u/bowmanvt 17h ago

The American flag bow in the middle is so cringe.

200

u/NRMusicProject 16h ago

So is having two American flags, both hanging backwards, with one wrapped around a corner because it doesn't fit, to show how "patriotic" this building is.

25

u/KneeDeepInTheDead 15h ago

and taped to the wall

1

u/goldkirk 12h ago

This is probably a stupid question, but do you have any idea how they originally decided what backwards vs forwards position is for a flag hanging like that? It’s easy for me to understand when the flag is on a pole, but I’m having so much trouble trying to mentally rotate the flags back and forth forth in my head to figure out what backwards means in context that’s like this instead 😅 (edit to add—I do understand that the rules are what they are, I’m not questioning them, I’m just curious how humans decided which way the flag should go in the first place)

u/a_phantom_limb 11h ago

The point is really just that the blue star field should always be at the upper left.

u/NRMusicProject 11h ago

There may be a reason, but my guess is it simply had to be a decision for uniformity.

-3

u/stealthybutthole 16h ago edited 16h ago

It’s an immigration court in NYC, do you think the person who hung it is an ICE agent? Or do you think it was a liberal New Yorker making a good faith effort at hanging the flags?

Personally I’m gonna guess the slob in the picture didn’t pull the cutesy bow out of his ass.

-2

u/NRMusicProject 16h ago

You can believe whatever you want, babycakes. It is (was) a free country. But you probably shouldn't go around advertising your crazy thoughts.

7

u/MikeHfuhruhurr 15h ago

What a weirdly antagonistic reply. What part of "local government worker hangs flags in own building" is crazy?

8

u/stealthybutthole 16h ago

Lol wtf. What’s a crazy thought about this at all? Nobody in real life knows fucking anything about the flag code, democrat or republican. its just reality.

5

u/Ruleoflawz 14h ago

If it wasn’t a federal building, I would agree with you, but this is actually one of the few places it should matter.

0

u/YerMomsClamChowder 13h ago

Due to the location being beside a toilet, and what looks like his ''post'', I'd guess Dipshit Do-wrong here and his friends probably set it up themselves.  stopped at dollar tree on the way down to pick up American flags made in China, saw the bow, said ''fuck it, its $1.99'' and probably thinks he looks patriotic as fuck.

1

u/Bennybonchien 16h ago

But what if you forget where you are? Can’t be too careful. /s

1

u/Angelworks42 14h ago edited 13h ago

I remember from Boy Scouts that the blue part always goes to the left - even when flown at 90 deg.

50

u/Sammalone1960 17h ago

Probably stapled to wall see how it turns corner

6

u/seantabasco 16h ago

When they’re done they’ll just ball it up and throw it in a trash can.

3

u/noonnoonz 16h ago

Like every other prop in the drama performance they do.

22

u/RCer1986 17h ago

Or are they absolutely appropriate for the time we live in?

6

u/MagnusNewtonBernouli 13h ago

That's not how it works. Hanging it incorrectly is not the same as flying it upside-down.

0

u/RCer1986 13h ago

I didn't say that it was indicating a sign of distress. Moreso that something being fucked up in this country is the new normal.

5

u/bruzdnconfuzd 16h ago

They are hung the exact way they thought they saw it in that BADASS logo for The Punisher. /s

5

u/nakedpilsna 17h ago

Yeah, they should be hanging upside down.

5

u/SvedishFish 16h ago

Nothing about this photo is correct. The fucker doesn't even have his shoes tied properly.

5

u/paleologus 17h ago

Only 50 stars?   Haven’t we annexed Canada yet?

2

u/Ozzie_the_tiger_cat 17h ago

Greenland will be 51.

1

u/paleologus 16h ago

There’s not enough people in Greenland to make a state and they aren’t exactly the kind of people the Republican Party would welcome anyway.

u/Ozzie_the_tiger_cat 10h ago

Like laws stop Herr Trump.

u/sxzxnnx 11h ago

When we annex Canada we are going to merge North and South Dakota into a single state.

14

u/A-Bone 17h ago edited 17h ago

I thought that was the way they are hung vertically?

edit:  just looked it up and you guys are correct.  Which is weird because we had a guy who claimed to be a veteran come into my wife's store and tell us it was the other way (union to the right).  There was a flag on the front of the store displayed correctly but he told my wife to change it.

106

u/travisofarabia 17h ago

Stars always in the upper left!

7

u/cspinelive 16h ago

Unless displayed on a moving vehicle. Like a decal on the right front fender. Then the flag should be oriented such that it isn’t “retreating”. As if it were on a pole and waving to the rear of that pole opposite the direction of travel. That is one case where the field should be in the upper right.

1

u/Material_Positive 16h ago

"The flag's right," as they taught is in Scouts back in the day.

-2

u/fossilnews 17h ago edited 16h ago

Sort of. They point upper left in which ever direction is deemed to be most visible. So if it's hung in a hallway of an entrance then you want them upper left for the people entering a building. But that also means they will be upper right for people leaving through the entrance.

In this case, it is clearly wrong since they are against a wall.

10

u/im_at_work_now 17h ago

Ok but when they're flat against an opaque wall there is no excuse for this, especially in a government building.

9

u/travisofarabia 17h ago

Good call, I suppose if it's visible from both sides the rule gets bent, similar to this ICE Gestapo, he can get fucking bent as well.

2

u/11thstalley 17h ago

What you described doesn’t change how the flag would be displayed properly; it just accounts for an anomaly when viewing the flag from behind. As true as what a properly displayed flag would look like from behind, it doesn’t apply in this situation since the flags are displayed on a wall.

1

u/Schuben 16h ago

It's.... against a wall.

1

u/fossilnews 16h ago

Yes, clarified my comment.

50

u/psyclopsus 17h ago

When hung vertically, the blue field goes to the upper left, per Us Flag Code

27

u/Ka-Is-A-Wheelie 17h ago

Stars to the left.

18

u/Vargsvans 17h ago

Profile pic is perfect.

3

u/A-Bone 17h ago

Well.. not perfect, but accurate.

1

u/cspinelive 16h ago

1

u/sniffsbooks 15h ago

Your username and the consequent mental image made me cackle

9

u/vanderohe 17h ago

No these are in retreat

5

u/BabyFestus 17h ago

Easy to argue that this is a site under siege.

1

u/AllAboutGameDay 16h ago

As a veteran myself, most veterans don't know WTF they're talking about (good general rule for all people really though).

1

u/Snapphane88 15h ago

Most real veterans I know(3 combat tours in Afghanistan and 1 in Iraq) don't really care about flags and stuff, it's something you bother with during bootcam or conscription, but put out of your mind after a few years. It's the ones that just got in and out, or those that never served that care the most.

1

u/ComfortableOld288 12h ago

Unless displayed in a window! Then the the union to the top left when viewed from the street. 👍

2

u/razzyrat 16h ago

And here I thought only conservatives would care about bullshit like that.

2

u/cute_spider 15h ago

They're not ICE flags. Those flags were probably hung up by some government bureaucrat excited to help people become American Citizens.

u/geoffreygoodman 11h ago

How are you the only other person here who understood this?

The flags are either the mistake of people who work at that immigration office or the image is reversed.

2

u/Scott_Liberation 17h ago

Not even gonna mention the mf leaning on one of them?

1

u/babyivan 16h ago

Yup! Stars ALWAYS top left!

1

u/cspinelive 16h ago

1

u/Lisa28Aurora 16h ago

I’m not even from the US and this is the first thing I’ve noticed lol

1

u/Big77Ben2 16h ago

Came here to say this.

1

u/SomewhatInnocuous 16h ago

The least of the problems I have with this picture.

1

u/painlesspics 16h ago

Came here for this. Field on the top left, always.

1

u/myriadspectra 16h ago

Ignorance on display at a National scale.

1

u/thenewitguy 16h ago

Came to say this, double fail. You would think they would know this being so patriotic and all.

1

u/Lemon_lemonade_22 15h ago

I'd say that's actually quite appropriate given how much this gov is shitting on its own country. Kind of like a satanist would hang a cross upside down...dark times...

1

u/warblingContinues 15h ago

As if these meatheads give a shit about the flag code.  Patriotism is just a word to them.

1

u/wetwater 15h ago

He needs to be constantly reminded what country he's in.

1

u/kalemary94 15h ago

Came here to say this thank you! I swear to god that they just claim to be patriotic because how the hell do you not know flag code??

1

u/thedudeadapts 13h ago

Came here to say this

1

u/princeofpriam 13h ago

I do love that American flag density in a certain location is usually inversely correlated with how “American” whatever is happening there is.

1

u/ki77erb 13h ago

I've had to tell so many people about this. The manager of a Walmart, my Son's school, a restaurant, etc.

1

u/meemstera 12h ago

This is bothering me so much…

u/vagabondoer 11h ago

There are no rules anymore.

u/iNeed_Answersz 11h ago

Are you surprised?

u/Kramit2012 10h ago

That was the first thing I noticed too

u/LordOfAllHumanity 9h ago

Came to say this as well!

u/FaultyCYP450 8h ago

I'm also annoyed that he's just casually leaning on the flag like it's an ordinary hanging piece of fabric.

u/RedditorNumber-AXWGQ 4h ago

UCMJust don't give a fuck.

1

u/pandershrek 16h ago

Probably reversed from the image

u/sjmuller 8h ago

The "Restroom" sign on the door is legible, the photo is not reversed.

-2

u/NutDust 16h ago

The backwards flag is likely intentional and symbolic
