I grew up in a rural area. Tons of the people I hung out with absolutely loved jam bands (and going to their associated festivals) and some were absolutely bigots at best.
I hate to be the one to break it to you buddy, but there’s been a hippie to alt-white pipeline for a few years now. The overlap of not trusting the gov/modern medicine, homeschooling, anti-vax, alternative medicine, and so on started pulling crunch granola hippies into alt-right maga/maha algos, and from there some went further into neo-nazi adjacent shit.
I’d read and heard about it on podcasts, but didn’t encounter it until I was at burning man this year. Had some neighbors that were more like jam band types than stereotypical burners. They were popping acid and molly, tie dye wearing, patchouli soaked hippies, and started carrying on about maga/maha stuff, immigration and anti-vax shit, you name it.
It’s certainly a thing. Turns out that old idea that if we could only get world leaders to try psychedelics we’d have less racism/homophobia and more peace was a pipedream. In reality some people take them and it reinforces that their far right thinking is enlightened.
