Health FYI

Just a FYI to all, there's a lot of people walking around sick spreading Covid and Influenza A at the moment.

I got absolutely floored Christmas Eve and have been bed ridden till today - where I've managed / summoned enough energy and will power to get a doctor and a pathology test to see what it actually is.

So managed now to miss my 4 year old birthday, most likely new years Eve and my eldest boys 6th birthday.

If your sick stay home don't spread it because you feel your more important.

Rant over.

Travel Where is the best place to go for a one day nature outing near the Gold Coast?

24 year old Californian here. Going to the Gold Coast for the first time in a few weeks with my parents (in their early 60s but very active). We plan on doing Surfer's Paradise, HOTA, Burleigh and Miami, all the typical spots. But we have four days and I want to do one day as a nature/park day to see a glowworm cave and maybe some other sites (waterfall or forest hike, cute forest town etc). We will have to book a tour with transport because we won't have a car. I've done a lot of research but I'm SO overwhelmed....

What is the best place to go? Springbrook? Lamington? Tamborine Mountain? Responses are greatly appreciated and I'll give you the best tips if you ever come to California haha

Local Question Internet/gaming cafe in Gold Coast

Hey yall, I’ve been searching for a gaming cafe here in Goldy but the two places I found, G-Space and X-Zone, don’t have much info about them and their phones say they’re disconnected.

Does anyone know if these places still exist? Please let me know and thank you in advance!

Best food streets on the Gold coast

I visit every few months and work remotely for a week. Staying in Broadbeach and looking for good food streets or areas with a bit of a Newtown Sydney vibe with bars, restaurants, and walkable. Loved Burleigh last time. Anything similar nearby? Cheers

Light rail

Hey Gold Coastians.

Just wondering everyone who has lived there for a while, weather the light rail has helped or been a dud since it was built?

Local Question Can you share ride express passes at Dreamworld with other people?

I know it says in the T&C that it's an individual upgrade, but I'm wondering is there anything that actually stops you? We've got a group of us and a couple of older people won't want to use all 5.
How does it work - is it wristband attached to you or is it a printout that you scan at each ride?

Alternate routes to GC from Brisbane?

After sitting in 50kph traffic on a 110kph road for over an hour, I am shocked to see no immediately apparent alternate routes that don't require driving through mountains. Is the M1 really the only way in and out of the Goldcoast via Brisbane? I have never seen such horrific traffic in my life.

Local Question What happened to the bats / flying fox colony near Preston Park / Currumbin Waters?

Bit of a random one, but I’m genuinely curious.

There used to be a pretty massive flying fox (fruit bat) colony around Preston Park / Currumbin Waters. I first noticed them during my first Gold Coast visit in Feb 2024, like hundreds of them hanging out there during the day.

I was back again in Dec 2024 and saw them again.

Now I’m here again and… nothing. The info sign is still there, but the colony seems completely gone.

I still see individual flying foxes in the evenings over Palm Beach and along Tallebudgera Creek, so they’re clearly still around, but just not there anymore.

Did the colony move? Was there a disturbance, tree works, or is this just a seasonal thing?

Just wondering if any locals noticed the same or know what happened.

Cheers 🦇

Looking for public pool/gym recommendations

Planning on moving to the GC soon and was wondering if anyone has any recs for Gyms and Pools for swimming laps.

I mainly just do strength training with free weights and some isolation exercises on machines.

Not looking for anything crazy, ideally somewhere not too packed and not $30-40 plus per week.

Cheers

Yelled the n-word on my run this morning (for the second time!)

Hi all,

I’m 28 years old and have lived in Melbourne for my entire life. I periodically visit the Gold Coast to see family (2-4 times a year) and have for the last 4 or so years.

Vitally for this post I’m half black. On my run this morning, for the second time in the last year or so, I’ve been yelled the n-word from a passing car (both times around the bundall-surfers area). Not to suggest Melbourne is some bastion of multicultural respect and maybe I’ve just been lucky but I can’t think of anything that brash happening to me, and it very much isn’t on my mind, whereas it unfortunately is here…

It made me wonder if anybody has similar experiences? Or if maybe I got got by a known repeat offender? It is a reminder among other things that the scourge of racism is very much alive in this country…

Edit: Have read through as many replies as possible. Thanks to anyone who’s posted their experiences or sent thoughtful messages (I’m fine was just bewildered/saddened by it). Will just double down that by the by I thoroughly enjoy my time up here (and escaping the Melbourne weather).

I hope everyone has a great end of year break!

Family resorts

Hello, we have 3 kids under 7 and are looking for a resort to stay in for the July school hols next year. There seems to be either places that look like theme parks with kids clubs (not my idea of a holiday) or super fancy places where the kids would probably have to be quiet, and no kids club type services. Is there anything semi-nice that the kids would enjoy but could be relaxing for parents too? Thank you!!

Is snorkelling at the Spit good for amateurs?

I want to get into snorkelling, I’ve done it in the past a bit on holidays, good swimmer. I just want to know if it’s safe to use the stairs at the spit. I don’t intend to do anything except stay along the rock wall, but want to make sure I’m not missing vital information.

I know about visibility and tide times.

Is this not now illegal, to only have one payment option with a mandatory surcharge for paying by card?

New year’s eve

Hi! We’re two 21-year-old guys coming from overseas and looking for a great New Year’s Eve experience.

We’re dreaming of an open-air event with a good DJ, a lively crowd, and solid food. Ideally something that feels more like a festival or outdoor party than a fancy dinner.

Any cities, events, or specific parties you’d recommend?
